About Tony Capria
Contact Us
Tony Capria has spent over 15 years working in law enforcement, including
working in corrections at the prisons featured in BETRAYAL, until he was forced
into retirement in 1989.
He began working as a policeman in Syracuse in New York, and after working
in patrol for 6 months, he worked as an investigator in the police department's
organized crime unit. After he took a few years off to go into business in 1976,
he returned to law enforcement in corrections as a guard at the Jamesville Penitentiary,
located near Syracuse. After recognizing the many problems with staffing and
training described in this book, he became active in reviving an organization
for correctional officers - the Onondaga County Correction Officers Benevolent
Association and became its president.
Soon his efforts to improve conditions at the penitentiary led to legislative
hearings, extensive media publicity, and a department shakeup, resulting in the
resignation of the county correctional commissioner and his replacement by a
new commissioner. Then, he began working as a deputy at the more modern sheriff's
jail in Onondaga County and was soon promoted to sergeant, responsible on his
shift for supervising about a dozen jail deputies and the custody of over 200
inmates.
Then, he was injured in the line of duty, leading to his fight against the system
to achieve fair pay for any deputy sheriff's injured in these circumstances.
During his own fight for justice, he has remained active in the union of jail
deputies, and he is still an active member today.
